We can help with: carpal tunnel, wrist pain, hand pain, numbness in the hand, wrist RSI (repetitive strain injury), and arthritis in the wrist and hand.
We provide hand and wrist pain treatments for a wide range of conditions including; carpal tunnel, arthritis in the wrist and hands, finger joint pain and repetitive strain injuries.
The wrist and hand joints are often prone to Repetitive Strain Injuries (RSI) – especially if you spend many hours typing, whether using a PC keyboard, tablet or phone.
The hands and wrists will also be working extra hard if you have a physical job which involves heavy lifting or fine machinery and other equipment, or if you’re a manual therapist like us!
In any case, RSI involves chronically tight and overused muscles in the forearm and hands, and a strain through the ligaments which support the joints – which can lead to inflammation and pain in the wrists and hands.
If not managed well, over time these conditions may lead to early onset of arthritis in the wrist or hand joints. These are also often the first joints to be affected by systemic forms of arthritis such as Rheumatoid Arthritis, as well as the more common Osteoarthritis.
Another common condition in this area is ‘Carpal Tunnel Syndrome’. This can manifest as pain, tingling or ‘pins & needles’ in the hand, and is due to compression of the nerves which supply the wrist and hand.
It’s also possible to experience symptoms in the wrist and hand as a result of nerve compression high up in the neck, where the nerves to the hand originate from.
Occasionally, we also help patients as part of their rehabilitation process after a fracture or an injury leading to muscle or ligament strain.
Reduce pain with our new Laser Therapy – cutting edge technology in MSK health, used to reduce inflammation and accelerate tissue repair.
To find the cause of your symptoms and exactly which structures are affected, we first note all the details about how the problem came about, what it feels like, timing, daily pattern, and aggravating or relieving factors.
We find out how you use your body during work, exercise and other activities. We also ask about any issues with your neck and the rest of the upper limb, your health in general, and any significant events in the past such as accidents, injuries or surgery.
We then observe and feel your wrist, hand and the rest of the upper limb, assessing movement and noting any restrictions or pain. We may also perform special tests to assess the condition of nerves, joints, muscles and ligaments.
Once we have established our working diagnosis we will always take time to explain to you what we found and let you know how we can help, and whether we need to make any referrals.
Our treatment approach is aimed at improving freedom of movement, muscle tone and circulation. We use specific massage, mobilisation and stretching techniques to improve the flexibility in joints and muscles, relieve tension, and ensure good circulation for effective recovery.
During the session, we also provide advice on exercise, ergonomics and other techniques to aid fast recovery and maintain the treatment results.
The approach to RSI focuses on achieving repair at a faster rate to wear & tear. This is not an easy task if you are using those joints and muscles to earn a living, but we have various tricks to try, and will empower you to take control and manage this condition for the best possible outcome.
