Well, because of the Meadow. And because bees are beautiful, and SO clever, they work together, and are so helpful and vital to the health of our natural world.
And also because of my darling daughter, who was a wee buzzy baby when I founded Meadowside, and her full name is Meadow Bee Huntley.
My friend Kev, who designed our first logo in 2013, knew Meadow by her full name and decided to add the bee to the logo – I took one look at it and knew it was right.
And there’s another connection, which Kev didn’t know, and even I didn’t quite realise at the time: my grandmother, Lucia.
My grandmother, Lucia Fridman-Rapoport (1912-1990), was born in Poland and came to live in Israel in 1936.
In her memoirs, she talks about reading ‘The Life of The Bee’ (a Nobel prize winning book by M. Maetelinck) in her teens, which has made such a lasting impression on her that when she came across a beehive in Israel, she immediately knew she wanted to keep bees.
Lucia became a devoted beekeeper, and the founder of a hive and honey factory which has over the years become a real icon in Israel – and is to this day the best known honey brand in the country.
I lost my grandmother when I was 9, but of all the people I have lost so far I carry her with me the most. She had a tough life, but I know from her memoirs and others’, and from my own memory, she lived it with a true spirit of positivity and joy, never giving up, and always finding the bright side.
I love that she has a part in our little ‘factory’ – where we work to make sweet, lovely people feel happier and healthier.
