If you’ve ever asked yourself, “Why is my baby crying so much, something must be wrong?”, or noticed them arching their back or struggling to settle after a feed, you’re not alone, we promise!
Sometimes, babies are simply adjusting to life outside the womb.
Other times, subtle tension from birth or tightness in the tummy, spine, diaphragm, or ribcage can make feeding, digestion, and settling uncomfortable. Even when everything appears medically “fine,” these little restrictions can affect your baby’s comfort.
Colic usually appears in the first few weeks of life and often improves by three to four months. It’s linked to the digestive system still learning to move milk and air in a smooth rhythm- a process called peristalsis.
Tension in the diaphragm, tummy wall, or lower spine can restrict this natural movement, causing trapped wind or discomfort. Babies may grunt, strain, or cry before passing wind or stool – a temporary stage called infant dyschezia – even though they aren’t constipated.
Reflux happens when milk travels back from the stomach into the oesophagus, causing hiccups, coughing, or fussiness. Silent reflux can be trickier to spot — your baby may arch, grimace, or resist lying flat, even if milk isn’t coming up.
Why it happens:
These treatments help your baby spend more time in a restful “digest and recover” state, often resulting in calmer feeds, less crying, and improved comfort overall.

Crying after feeds is often a sign that tension has built up in the diaphragm, ribcage, spine, or cranial structures, which can make swallowing, digestion, and wind release more difficult. Gentle osteopathic treatment helps release this tension, improving diaphragm movement, relaxing the tummy, and supporting smoother feeding and digestion.
Yes. Many colic symptoms are caused by tightness in the diaphragm, abdominal wall, or lower spine, which can slow digestion and make passing wind difficult. Gentle abdominal release, myofascial techniques, and spinal mobilisation help the tummy relax, improving digestive flow and easing discomfort.
It depends on your baby’s needs. Some infants improve after one session, while others benefit from a short Course of Care of treatments. Your osteopath will create a personalised plan based on your baby’s symptoms and response to treatment.
Yes. By releasing cranial, diaphragmatic, and spinal tension, osteopathy can improve your baby’s overall comfort, making it easier for them to feed, digest, and settle for rest or sleep. Many parents notice a softer tummy, calmer feeds, and more restful periods after treatment.
